The salary range for this position is: $100,000 - $232,000, plus individuals may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are seeking a Research and Development Engineer with mechanical and materials engineering knowledge to join the Characterization and Testing team in the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State with mechanical and materials engineering to join our team in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. This role will involve testing structures and systems plus analyzing data with a particular emphasis on multi-material assemblies, including fiber-reinforced polymer composite structures. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with our research and development team to perform solutions and present analytical results. ARL at Penn State University is dedicated to developing innovative solutions to complex national problems, with a primary focus on supporting the U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, and Intel communities.

You will:

+ Assist with scheduling testing, tracking, execution of static and dynamic trials to support development and demonstration of emergent metal, composite and hybrid components and systems

+ Contribute to the fabrication of test hardware and fixtures, and testing activities

+ Utilize CAD and other engineering tools to create and model mechanical designs

+ Collaborate with fellow engineers to develop innovative solutions

The Deployables and Undersea Communications Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking an experienced design engineer whose primary tasking will be to design, analyze, prototype, and test hardware for undersea weapons and unmanned undersea vehicles for the US Navy. ARL/Penn State is an integral part of one of the leading research universities in the nation and develops innovative solutions to challenging problems in support of our undersea warfare sponsors.

+ Analyze requirements, identify limitations and problems, and develop innovative mechanical solution concepts

+ Collaborate closely with team members and area leads

This position can be filled at multiple levels, depending on your education and experience. Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related discipline; 14+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.

Required skills/experience areas include:

+ Candidates must be able to demonstrate proficient and comprehensive knowledge of the principles and best practices of mechanical design.

+ Minimum of 14+ years of detailed design experience developing mechanical structures, components, or mechanisms, from concept to product release preferably within the defense or aerospace industry

+ Thorough understanding and practice of mechanical engineering fundamentals (e.g. statics, dynamics, strength of materials, GD&T)

+ Proficiency in using hand calculations to determine forces and resultant stresses on structures, as well as, perform basic thermal & fluid flow calculations

+ Ability to work across multiple engineering disciplines (mechanical, hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, materials, manufacturing)

+ Demonstrated judgment in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual design challenges with a focus on design simplicity and reliability

+ Ability to communicate engineering problems and design concepts through presentations to engineers, designers, scientists, and other project partners

+ Ability to work independently on complex or strategic assignments with minimal supervision.

Working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA. This position may require occasional travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

The Process Engineer is responsible for identifying and mitigating packaging issues for existing business through strong engineering and process improvement methods. Provide technical leadership for new product launches. Lead continuous improvement activities. Secondary tasks include specify, purchase, and commission new equipment and manage capital finances. Provide technical support for new business (Sales/Business Development Support). · Writes and executes engineering protocols as needed.

· Uses DOE (Design of experiments) to control variables while testing.

· Applies sound engineering principles to improve existing equipment, packaging design and processes by reducing waste, increasing throughput, reducing energy consumption, or eliminating human interaction through automation.

· Facilitates cross-functional Lean Six Sigma process improvement teams using a DMAIC method.

· Responsible for the administration, implementation, and project management of new business, including conformance with customer requirements and equipment / process performance criteria.

· Measure and analyze performance metrics of the production area and spearhead initiatives to decrease variability and waste.
