Summary:

+ A Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant II is an individual trained on-the-job or through a structured Phlebotomy program to draw blood for diagnostic testing from patients aged infant through older adult. The Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant also processes a variety of clinical specimens for diagnostic laboratory testing and accesses associated patient records. (Specimen Receiving Processing - HUP - 3400 Spruce Street)

Responsibilities:

+ Correctly identifies the stage of growth of development of patients and significant others; Utilizes knowledge of growth and development when communicating to various age groups; Explains appropriate information according to age and developmental level of patients and visitors; Identifies communication barriers and intervenes appropriately; Recognizes cultural differences and the need to adjust communication styles and behaviors to meet the needs of the patient (e.g. direct eye contact, touching with transferring); Listens to patient's queries, comments and/or concerns and provides appropriate information and responses; Introduces self when interacting with patients, families, visitors or other employees.

+ Entry of (release of) patient demographics, test orders, billing information into a variety of computer systems (EMR/LIS); Follows established SOP and age-specific techniques for the collection of biological specimens for analysis and evaluates and solves problems related to that process; Correctly identifies outpatients and inpatients according to approved protocols with 100% accuracy; Performs accurate venipuncture and micro (capillary) techniques in sample collection; May perform specialized collection to include breath alcohol testing, hair collection, and EKGs.

+ Properly labels specimens with 100% accuracy; Draws all timed/scheduled samples in a timely manner; Observes emotional and physical state of patient for any adverse reactions to phlebotomy; Performs assigned patient-sample processing activities.

+ Follows established SOP for the processing of biological specimens for analysis and evaluates and solves problems related to that process; Operates the pneumatic tube system properly and observes all Infection Control policies while handling specimens; Provides timely distribution of specimens to appropriate laboratory sections; Maintains accurate and orderly log records and/or worksheets where required according to SOP’s.

+ Maintains a safe and orderly work area; Demonstrates safe work practices; Keeps work area free from personal documents & items; Answers phone in a professional, courteous, and timely manner; speaking to caller in a caring manner; Answers questions or refers callers to the appropriate source; Avoids putting caller on hold or transferring call unnecessarily.

+ Research phone inquiries regarding specimen collection or test results by referencing available manuals and records and calls caller back promptly; Understands collection requirements for special or referral testing, prepares specimens, ensures integrity and correctness of sample, and arranges for dispatch and pick-up of specimens; Keeps current with laboratory minutes and documented changes.

+ Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies and appropriately communicates need to re-order before supplies run out; Assists with the instruction of procedures and techniques to other employees and students; Performs daily temperature checks on rooms, refrigerators, freezers, incubators and preventive maintenance on centrifuges as needed.

+ Projects an image of professionalism in appearance and conduct at all times; Works well with peers and those in authority; Works to promote the Penn Medicine BE standards; Promotes patient and staff relations and displays pride in work; Complies with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety, and HIPAA regulations; Notifies Supervisor or Safety Officer of hazards when found; Completes annual mandatories on or before the due date; Responsible for maintaining adequate staffing on all three shifts, weekends and holidays.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics seeks to hire a n under graduate student or resent graduate to work part-time as a Research A ssi stant . The selected candidate will be taught how our rail mounted vacuum system works ( TORPSy ). This will include learning about vacuum and cooling hardware, and programming using PLC. The goal is to have this research assistant take over TORPSy from our current undergraduate research assistant and write the ground support electronics (GSE) program for our next suborbital rocket, OGRE. This role will include general lab upkeep tasks such as sweeping and mopping the lab. Expected hours will be approximately 12 ho urs /week. The s elected c andidate will report to Dr. James Tutt. **Job Description:**

The Clinical Research Project Coordinator position provides research project support to the requesting department, ensuring timely and effective activation and completion of research projects. Responsibilities include routine to moderately complex project coordination and management, as well as communication and documentation as required by the research departments and specific assignments within the research program.

**Essential Functions**

+ **Research Support and Administration:** Support various clinical research studies and departments across the Intermountain system. Based on role, may coordinate (1) review of IRB/HRPP submissions and provide support to research oversight committees and research programs, coordinate review and oversee submission, or (2) centralized administrative and technical functions associated with grants, contracts and other agreements from external funding sources.

+ **Project Planning & Execution:** Define, develop, and execute clinical research project plans, including work plans and schedules. Identify needed resources, roles, and responsibilities for assigned studies. Facilitate feedback from key participants and participate as a team member when needed.

+ **Budget & Scope Management:** Develop comprehensive budget and scope documents for clinical research studies. Assist with business case and proposal development, including budget preparation and completion of required forms for internal and external routing.

+ **Study Requirements & Compliance:** Analyze study requirements to ensure sponsor and study requirements are met. Communicate impacts on existing studies to internal and external stakeholders. Look for cost-effective methods to facilitate study execution while meeting functional and regulatory requirements.

+ **Quality Assurance & Documentation:** Participate in quality assurance plans and reviews as requested. Document clinical research study deliverables, track and communicate timelines, and prepare reports and presentations on findings. Ensure completion of deliverables per specified deadlines. Support research billing by reviewing research accounts and reconciling invoices.

+ **Study Lifecycle Management:** Manage study startup, maintenance, and closeout activities. Provide support and guidance to Clinical Research study teams on study financials, and act as a source expert and liaison. As requested, provide support and back up as clinical research coordinator.

+ **Medicare Coverage Analysis:** Support the development of Medicare Coverage Analysis for clinical trials. Draft and prepare coverage analysis documents, review reimbursement guidelines, ensure correct billing, and provide coverage review.

+ **Auditing & Risk Management:** Coordinate project assessments and response planning. Communicate risks, develop and execute strategies, and lead auditing activities to ensure compliance with guidelines and regulations.

Job Duties

Phlebotomist II is responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing and accurate information for the system and medical laboratories' clients. Phlebotomist II can independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults. Phlebotomist II will obtain blood specimens, process specimens for analysis, utilize the appropriate computer systems to register patients, facilitate billing, and perform overall specimen accessioning and processing. Phlebotomist II will have interpersonal communication ability to explain the blood drawing process and to show a comforting attitude toward patients.

+ Performs venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.

+ Exhibits knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.

+ Performs accessioning procedures appropriately and accurately to ensure positive identification of the specimens.

Position Details

As a phlebotomist, you'll support Geisinger’s mission of providing exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services. At Geisinger, our phlebotomists are the friendly faces that collect samples to be analyzed by our state-of-the-art labs. Supporting a varied patient population, you’ll be responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting.

There are many other tasks our phlebotomists complete, such as troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, as well as aiding our patients.

We have many different skill levels in our labs, from new to experienced phlebotomists, and all skill levels are well utilized. Geisinger employs phlebotomists in roles I, II, and III. We also have numerous staff members who pursue their ASCP certification and become trainers for our department!

Phlebotomist I, II and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation. Salary commensurate with experience. Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar will be considered! Military experience will be considered. US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties.
