Job Duties

​Phlebotomist II is responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing and accurate information for the system and medical laboratories' clients. Phlebotomist II can independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults. Phlebotomist II will obtain blood specimens, process specimens for analysis, utilize the appropriate computer systems to register patients, facilitate billing, and perform overall specimen accessioning and processing. Phlebotomist II will have interpersonal communication ability to explain the blood drawing process and to show a comforting attitude toward patients.

+ Performs venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.

+ Exhibits knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.

+ Performs accessioning procedures appropriately and accurately to ensure positive identification of the specimens.

+ Recognizes and resolves discrepancies as appropriate.

+ Evaluates specimen suitability and acceptability.

+ Resolves or refers problems as appropriate.

+ Performs testing and records Point of Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.

+ Handles and replenishes reagents and supplies according to established protocols as assigned.

+ Follows established reporting procedures as appropriate.

+ Records and reports problems and solutions as appropriate.

+ Navigates and accesses multiple computer applications as needed.

+ Knows and abides by related policies and procedures including compliance policies.

+ Provides phlebotomy coverage as required to Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or performs in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.

+ Successful completion of initial and subsequent competency exams required.

Position Details

As a phlebotomist, you'll support Geisinger’s mission of providing exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services. At Geisinger, our phlebotomists are the friendly faces that collect samples to be analyzed by our state-of-the-art labs. Supporting a varied patient population, you’ll be responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting.

There are many other tasks our phlebotomists complete, such as troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, as well as aiding our patients.

We have many different skill levels in our labs, from new to experienced phlebotomists, and all skill levels are well utilized. Geisinger employs phlebotomists in roles I, II, and III. We also have numerous staff members who pursue their ASCP certification and become trainers for our department!

Phlebotomist I, II and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation. Salary commensurate with experience.

+ Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar will be considered!

+ Military experience will be considered. US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties.

Medical Laboratory Technician - Core Lab - PRN

Location: Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, PA

Schedule: PRN/Per Diem

Every third weekend and Holiday

Performs and interprets routine diagnostic procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology and immunology. General technicians will ordinarily be assigned to regular routine work in various divisions of the laboratory.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Understands and follows hospital fire and safety procedures: knows personal role in case of a fire.

2. Maintains membership and active participation in ASCP as a registered Medical Laboratory Technician.

3. Understands and follows all departmental policies and procedures.

4. Exhibits a thorough knowledge of safety requirements in the laboratory as well as special requirements in the designated area of responsibility.

5. Assesses and re-assigns workload in order to comply with emergency or critical request requirements.

6. Communicates with other shifts regarding departmental work.

7. Performs routine and stat procedures according to laboratory specifications as described in procedure manuals; performs repeat testing when results are questionable.

8. Collects patient specimens using age specific criteria when needed and correctly labels and initials.

9. Performs procedures within the stated turn-around time at least 95% of the time.

10. Calls stat or critical values according to current laboratory policy.

11. Enter results into computer system within 1 hour of test completion with a minimum of 99% accuracy.

12. Performs and interprets diagnostic procedures; performs repeat tests when results are questionable.

13. Judges adequacy of submitted specimens.

14. Is familiar with reference ranges, knows expected deviations from normal and acts according to prescribed procedures. Investigates possible causes for abnormal results.

15. Performs and results quality control as required and reports corrective action in maintenance logs for Quality Control problems 100% of the time. Ensures that quality control criteria are met before patient's reports are accepted.

16. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on instruments and reports in writing if instruments not functioning properly.

17. Applies problem solving and trouble shooting skills to identify problems affecting instruments, techniques or other components.

18. Is familiar with and helps comply with QA standards and indicators.

19. Assures and demonstrates compliance with regulations established by accrediting bodies through successful participation in CAP and other inspection entities.

20. Maintains and achieves departmental competency in bench skills with annual assessment by Section Manager with completion of annual packets for each department as appropriate.

21. Practices cost saving procedures commensurate with maintaining quality standards.

22. Attends continuing education seminars/professional meetings.

23. Assists with evaluation of new or modified techniques.

24. Assists in training new employees.

25. Assists with student interns and student tours of the laboratory.

26. Evaluates and restocks supplies as depleted, alerts manager when necessary.

27. Cleans countertops a minimum of once per shift or as required to maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.

28. Exhibits and demonstrates a thorough understanding of test procedures in the designated departmental area.

29. Maintains proficiency in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting all automated equipment in the designated departmental area.

30. Successfully participates in CAP surveys.

31. Attends monthly staff meetings to stay informed of continual changes in the laboratory.

32. Assumes charge role duties in the absence of Section Manager when appropriate.

33. Attends continuing education seminars/professional meetings. Fulfills annual continuing education requirements and reports to Education Department for tracking.

Qualifications and Standards

Education: Meets educational requirements set forth by ASCP for a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). Associate degree preferred.

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required.

Certifications/Licensure: Registered or registry eligible as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the Registry Board of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). Must achieve registered status within one year of employment.

UPMC Department of Dermatology is hiring a full-time Clinical Research Associate to join their team in Oakland, PA! In this position you will work Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm helping providers recruit subjects and consent to clinical trials, scheduling subject visits as per protocol, obtaining medical history and medication lists, administering patient reported outcomes, obtaining blood samples, following up on test results, and coordinating additional care as needed.

+ Create individualized study calendars and reviews them with the patient.

+ Meet with the principal investigator and Clinical Research Coordinator/Supervisor to review patient status on as needed basis.

+ Responsible for prompt and accurate data collection for protocols.

+ Assist coordinator in preparing, sending and tracking documents for re-consenting patients.

+ Insure that patient's records, slides, radiology tests, lab work results, etc. are obtained and reviewed prior to patient entry onto a study.

+ Assist in verifying subject eligibility according to protocols by reviewing medical records, laboratory, and radiology or CT scan results.

+ Complete financial review forms of potential patients to determine insurance coverage for standard of care procedures and completion of requisition forms.

+ Create study specific source documents, case report forms and study visit checklists.

+ Facilitate the enrollment of subjects to trials open to the community network sites and will follow up on outstanding data collections.

+ Facilitate follow-up of protocol patients by developing maintenance-therapy data collection sheets for all protocol patients who require follow-up.

+ Assist in the coordination of initiation, site evaluation, monitoring visits, and audits required by the sponsor.

The Lab at UPMC Williamsport is hiring a full time Phlebotomist! The shift is 6:45AM - 3:15PM. Every 3rd weekend and holiday rotation required. This position has the responsibility and accountability for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection of inpatients and/or outpatients. + As required, performs related clerical duties, and utilizes various computer functions to accurately enter demographic information into the information system(s), enters test orders, receives, cancels, charges, and credits tests, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.

**SUMMARY OF POSITION:**

Performs and reports various analyses of multiple specimen sources. Performs duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)** :

+ Associate's Degree required in medical technology.

+ Must take the MLT American Society of Clinical Pathology Exam (ASCP) within one (1) year of hire.

Summary:

+ A Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant II is an individual trained on-the-job or through a structured Phlebotomy program to draw blood for diagnostic testing from patients aged infant through older adult. The Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant also processes a variety of clinical specimens for diagnostic laboratory testing and accesses associated patient records. (HUP -Penn Liver Transplant Reading - 301 S 7th Avenue West Reading, PA 19611)

+ The shift is Monday - Friday from 7:00am - 4:00pm.

+ Could potentially be required to work a half day at the Lancaster location once a week with travel reimbursement.

Responsibilities:

+ Correctly identifies the stage of growth of development of patients and significant others; Utilizes knowledge of growth and development when communicating to various age groups; Explains appropriate information according to age and developmental level of patients and visitors; Identifies communication barriers and intervenes appropriately; Recognizes cultural differences and the need to adjust communication styles and behaviors to meet the needs of the patient (e.g. direct eye contact, touching with transferring); Listens to patient's queries, comments and/or concerns and provides appropriate information and responses; Introduces self when interacting with patients, families, visitors or other employees.

+ Entry of (release of) patient demographics, test orders, billing information into a variety of computer systems (EMR/LIS); Follows established SOP and age-specific techniques for the collection of biological specimens for analysis and evaluates and solves problems related to that process; Correctly identifies outpatients and inpatients according to approved protocols with 100% accuracy; Performs accurate venipuncture and micro (capillary) techniques in sample collection; May perform specialized collection to include breath alcohol testing, hair collection, and EKGs.

+ Properly labels specimens with 100% accuracy; Draws all timed/scheduled samples in a timely manner; Observes emotional and physical state of patient for any adverse reactions to phlebotomy; Performs assigned patient-sample processing activities.

+ Follows established SOP for the processing of biological specimens for analysis and evaluates and solves problems related to that process; Operates the pneumatic tube system properly and observes all Infection Control policies while handling specimens; Provides timely distribution of specimens to appropriate laboratory sections; Maintains accurate and orderly log records and/or worksheets where required according to SOP’s.

+ Maintains a safe and orderly work area; Demonstrates safe work practices; Keeps work area free from personal documents & items; Answers phone in a professional, courteous, and timely manner; speaking to caller in a caring manner; Answers questions or refers callers to the appropriate source; Avoids putting caller on hold or transferring call unnecessarily.

+ Research phone inquiries regarding specimen collection or test results by referencing available manuals and records and calls caller back promptly; Understands collection requirements for special or referral testing, prepares specimens, ensures integrity and correctness of sample, and arranges for dispatch and pick-up of specimens; Keeps current with laboratory minutes and documented changes.

+ Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies and appropriately communicates need to re-order before supplies run out; Assists with the instruction of procedures and techniques to other employees and students; Performs daily temperature checks on rooms, refrigerators, freezers, incubators and preventive maintenance on centrifuges as needed.

+ Projects an image of professionalism in appearance and conduct at all times; Works well with peers and those in authority; Works to promote the Penn Medicine BE standards; Promotes patient and staff relations and displays pride in work; Complies with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety, and HIPAA regulations; Notifies Supervisor or Safety Officer of hazards when found; Completes annual mandatories on or before the due date; Responsible for maintaining adequate staffing on all three shifts, weekends and holidays.

Credentials:

+ Certification as a PBT or MLA by a minimum knowledge-based exam such as the Board of Certification PBT(ASCP) or MLA(ASCP) Individuals without the certification will be considered Phlebotomy Lab Assistant I.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

+ H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

+ Phlebotomy training and experience in an outpatient or hospital setting, Prior experience in hospital laboratory receiving area and Prior experience with the Laboratory Information System preferred.
