Dental Assistants

**Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is hiring a Dental Hygienist to work at the main hospital location in Lawrenceville.** The Dental Hygienist, under general supervision, according to the established policies and procedures in accordance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Dental Law, performs paraprofessional duties necessary to preserve dental health and prevent the spread of dental disease.

This position has the potential to travel up to 5% of the time to Children's satellites.

**Responsibilities:**

+ Give and receive accurate and complete information to parents and doctors while displaying professionalism and perform accurate and thorough charting of patient data.

+ Instruct patient and parent on the proper oral hygiene.

+ Take and develop radiographs of a consistent, good diagnostic quality for review by dentist.

+ Perform all necessary housekeeping procedures including keeping all work areas properly stocked. Manage spills and patient accidents.

+ Place topical anesthetics, rubber dam; placement of occlusal sealants using four handed dental assisting techniques if assisting is necessary.

+ Teach hygiene students from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine.

+ Page, greet and seat patient. Scale and polish primary and permanent dentition and apply topical fluoride. Prepare electronic documents including discharge summary and school/work excuse.

+ Maintain equipment and supplies as directed by the clinic coordinator.

+ High school diploma is required.

+ Graduation from accredited dental hygiene program.

+ Dental hygiene experience preferred.

+ Technical skills to perform scaling, polishing, chairside assistance and all dental hygiene duties.

+ Ability to interact with doctors, patients, families and students in order to obtain and relay information on hygiene status, as well as instruct dental students. **Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**

+ CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

Job Summary

To act as both an office manager and chair-side assistant, in order to help maintain an efficient, safe and productive dental office. The Dental Assistant will adhere to evidence-based practice guidelines, professional standards, and state and federal requirements.

Job Duties

+ Maintain a clean dental office and housekeeping duties as assigned by the dentist.

+ Communication – Maintain communication with KP staff, nurses and outside office referrals regarding dental office.

+ Safety – Perform and monitor monthly infection control. Sterilize instruments utilizing appropriate techniques and according to OSHA regulations. Conduct cleaning of the sterilizer according to established protocols and time. Perform weekly spore testing for sterilizers.

+ Maintenance – Perform biweekly maintenance of x-ray developer. Perform weekly maintenance of the autoclave.

+ All other duties assigned by management. 6. Medical Treatment – Assist in 4-handed dentistry. Take quality radiographs. Administration – Gather client charts for discharge and upload to the system weekly. Maintain and transmit appropriate information for billing of services. Enter all dental information into the health service system. Schedule dental appointments for KidsPeace Dentist.

Qualifications

+ High School Graduate or equivalent required.

+ Certification as a dental assistant required/ X-ray certification required.

+ Prior experience in a dental office is preferred.

+ Excellent written and oral communication skills. Bilingual preferred.

+ Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, including the ability to interact with all levels of staff.

+ Must be at least 21 years of age.

+ Experience with acute emotionally challenged children or adolescents preferred.

+ Valid driver’s license.

+ Demonstrated computer experience in current technology, including Lawson, Word and Excel.
