Job Duties:

Phlebotomist II is responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing and accurate information for the system and medical laboratories' clients. Phlebotomist II can independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults. Phlebotomist II will obtain blood specimens, process specimens for analysis, utilize the appropriate computer systems to register patients, facilitate billing, and perform overall specimen accessioning and processing. Phlebotomist II will have interpersonal communication ability to explain the blood drawing process and to show a comforting attitude toward patients.

+ Performs venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.

+ Exhibits knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.

+ Performs accessioning procedures appropriately and accurately to ensure positive identification of the specimens.

+ Recognizes and resolves discrepancies as appropriate.

+ Evaluates specimen suitability and acceptability.

+ Resolves or refers problems as appropriate.

+ Performs testing and records Point of Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.

+ Handles and replenishes reagents and supplies according to established protocols as assigned.

+ Follows established reporting procedures as appropriate.

+ Records and reports problems and solutions as appropriate.

+ Navigates and accesses multiple computer applications as needed.

+ Knows and abides by related policies and procedures including compliance policies.

+ Provides phlebotomy coverage as required to Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or performs in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.

+ Successful completion of initial and subsequent competency exams required.

As a phlebotomist, you'll support Geisinger’s mission of providing exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services. At Geisinger, our phlebotomists are the friendly faces that collect samples to be analyzed by our state-of-the-art labs. Supporting a varied patient population, you’ll be responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting.

There are many other tasks our phlebotomists complete, such as troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, as well as aiding our patients.

We have many different skill levels in our labs, from new to experienced phlebotomists, and all skill levels are well utilized. Geisinger employs phlebotomists in roles I, II, and III. We also have numerous staff members who pursue their ASCP certification and become trainers for our department!

Phlebotomist I, II and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation. Salary commensurate with experience. Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar will be considered! Military experience will be considered. US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties.

**The Opportunity**

Responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

You will report to the Assistant Center Manager

**The Role**

+ In compliance with SOPs perform all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set-up, donor monitoring and donor disconnect.

+ In compliance with SOPs and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, performs venipuncture on donors to begin pheresis process.

+ Evaluates vein performance of the donor to identify possible problems; makes necessary corrections in order to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety. Ensures donation process is efficient and makes adjustments when necessary to make the process a positive experience for the donor.

+ May educate new donors on the use of therapeutic products made from donated plasma. Explains the screening process, the health screening tests performed, the appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition and any other information pertinent to the donor. Ensures that all donor questions are answered timely, accurately and professionally.

+ Maintains alertness to any reaction by donors and assists with reactions or notifies appropriate staff.

+ Uses Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents that occur during the pheresis process, such as machine alerts and alarms, volume variances and donor adverse events.

+ Required to perform calibrations and verify that maintenance has been performed as outlined in the SOPs. Required to respond to and resolve complex equipment alarms or donor issues.

+ Troubleshoots equipment failures. Creates incident documentation, removes and/or replaces equipment from service.

+ Monitors donor flow on the donor floor to assure continuous turnover. Alerts Group Leader or Supervisor of donor flow issues.

+ Collects arm samples or whole blood samples from donors for testing.

+ Ensures the accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

+ Understands the policies and procedures associated with hyper immune programs at the center if applicable.

+ Maintains clean efficient work environment, and ensures sufficient operating supplies and forms are available as needed. Follows all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures. Promotes safety in all actions. May conduct routine audits of these internal procedures and documentation.

+ Maintains confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information.

+ May be cross-trained in other areas to meet the needs of the business.

+ Bilingual skills may be required, at the discretion of the organization, to meet the needs of the business.

+ Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

**Overview**

Performs cell culture and cell-biology based assays according to and in compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and/or Points to Consider (PTC) guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Under direct supervision, completes batch records and other required documentation and performs laboratory maintenance duties according to GLP, cGMP, CFR and/or PTC guidelines and SOPs. Performs additional Research & Development activities as required.

• Conducts cell culture assays and lab procedures according to and in compliance with GLP, cGMP, CFR and/or PTC guidelines and SOPs.

• Perform cell culture of in-house cell lines and test articles from outside clients.

• Accurately completes test methods and other required documentation according to and in compliance with GLP, cGMP, CFR and/or PTC guidelines and SOPs.

• Maintains laboratory notebook (when required) and follows all general and laboratory SOPs.

+ Medical Lab Technician Certification through ASCP, AMT, ACHI or an equivalent certification agency must be obtained within 18 months of employment for all Medical Lab Technicians at the Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Department of Pathology.

+ Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. **SUMMARY OF POSITION:**

**Job Description Summary**

Responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

**Job Description**

Main Responsibilities

1. In compliance with SOPs, performs all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor setup, donor monitoring and donor disconnect. 2. In compliance with SOPs and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, performs venipuncture on donors to begin pheresis process.

3. Evaluates vein performance of the donor to identify possible problems; makes necessary corrections in order to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety. Ensures donation process is efficient and makes adjustments when necessary to make the process a positive experience for the donor.

4. May educate new donors on the use of therapeutic products made from donated plasma. Explains the screening process, the health screening tests performed, the appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition and any other information pertinent to the donor. Ensures that all donor questions are answered timely, accurately and professionally.

5. Maintains alertness to any reaction by donors and assists with reactions or notifies appropriate staff.

6. Uses Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents that occur during the pheresis process, such as machine alerts and alarms, volume variances and donor adverse events. 7 Required to perform calibrations and verify that maintenance has been performed as outlined in the SOPs. Required to respond to and resolve complex equipment alarms or donor issues.

8. Troubleshoots equipment failures. Creates incident documentation, removes and/or replaces equipment from service.

9. Monitors donor flow on the donor floor to assure continuous turnover. Alerts Group Leader of Supervisor of donor flow issues.

10. Collects arm samples or whole blood samples from donors for testing.

11. Ensures the accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

12. Understands the policies and procedures associated with hyper immune programs at the center if applicable.

13. Maintains clean efficient work environment, and ensures sufficient operating supplies and forms are available as needed. Follows all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures. Promotes safety in all actions.

14. Maintains confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information.

15. May be cross-trained in other areas to meet the needs of the business.

16. Bilingual skills may be required, at the discretion of the organization, to meet the needs of the business.

17. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

**Education**

 High school diploma or equivalent required.

**Experience**

 Minimum twelve (12) months experience in a medical or health care environment preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
